Floss, Brush, Rinse: Does the Order Really Matter?

When it comes to oral hygiene, most of us know the basics: brush, floss, and rinse. But have you ever wondered if the order in which you do these steps makes a difference? At Laguna West Dental, we’re here to help answer that question and provide you with insights to maximize your oral care routine.

Why the Order Might Matter

The sequence of brushing, flossing, and rinsing isn’t just about personal preference—it can actually impact how effective your oral hygiene routine is. Each step plays a unique role in maintaining a healthy mouth, and how you combine them can influence the results.

Breaking Down Each Step

1. Flossing
Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline—areas your toothbrush can’t reach.

  • Why Flossing First Is Best: Flossing first loosens debris and bacteria, allowing your toothbrush and toothpaste to do a better job of cleaning your teeth afterward.
  • Fact: According to the American Dental Association (ADA), flossing can remove up to 80% of plaque between teeth.

2. Brushing
Brushing removes plaque and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth and helps protect your enamel.

  • Timing Matters: Brush for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste to ensure thorough cleaning and enamel strengthening.
  • Floss First, Then Brush: Brushing after flossing removes the debris that flossing dislodged, giving you a cleaner finish.

3. Rinsing
Rinsing with mouthwash helps kill bacteria, freshens breath, and strengthens enamel, depending on the type of rinse you use.

  • Why Rinsing Last Works Best: Mouthwash can reach areas missed by brushing and flossing, leaving your mouth clean and fresh.
  • Pro Tip: Avoid rinsing immediately after brushing if you use a fluoride mouthwash. The ADA recommends waiting a bit to allow fluoride from your toothpaste to absorb fully.

The Recommended Order

To get the most out of your oral hygiene routine, try this order:

  1. Floss First: Dislodge food and plaque from between your teeth.
  2. Brush Second: Use a fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth thoroughly.
  3. Rinse Last: Finish with a fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash to kill germs and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

Why Consistency Is Key

While the order of your routine can enhance its effectiveness, consistency is the most critical factor. The best oral hygiene routine is one that you stick to twice a day, every day.

Common Myths About Oral Hygiene

  • “Rinsing with water after brushing is necessary.”
Rinsing immediately washes away the fluoride from your toothpaste, reducing its protective benefits. Instead, spit out excess toothpaste and let the fluoride work.
  • “Mouthwash can replace brushing or flossing.”
Mouthwash is a great addition, but it’s not a substitute for brushing and flossing. It’s best used as the final step for optimal results.

I followed my dentist for over 30 years. When he retired (love and miss you Dr. You) I was so nervous about everything, especially how my dentist was going to be. Long story short. I am blessed, yet again! My new dentist is Dr. Sanghvi. Here come the adjectives! She is so nice, informative, caring, insures i understand what and why she is going to do something, supportive, professional, down to earth, explains things, charming personality. She has such a calm and peaceful spirit and a beautiful-contagious smile. She makes me feel safe and truly has my best interest at heart when it comes to my teeth and well-being. She even takes the time to chat "life" stuff during her busy schedule. I am glad to have met her and look forward to many years with Dr. Sanghvi. To boot, love ALL the staff.

What a amazing experience all around. I brought my partner in for a same day emergency extraction for his wisdom tooth, he was able to be the the dentist chair within an hour of calling. The care, concern and level of compassion in unmatched. A big thank you to the entire staff. We will see you again on future appointments.

I love everyone there! They are so friendly and helpful. I don't have insurance but they were less expensive than other dentists.

Truly an exceptional office. I switched to this practice 1.5 years ago, and wish I had sooner. The hygienists trained me to floss and brush correctly, and happy to say my appearance/level of pain has improved tremendously no thanks to their efforts. The dentists offer options while also understanding my goals for the future. I can't speak highly enough of this place, and every interaction has been very pleasant and shows genuine interest and kindness.

This place shows a lot of care and compassion towards their patients. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming as well. I moved my family to this location because of the level of service we receive each visit. I love their attention to detail. Thank you!

I have such a fear of dental work (had a horrible dentist as a child who felt I did not need any numbing before most drilling) my whole life. But everyone here is so gentle so encouraging to report pain. I don't feel as much fear as I used to....thank you Dr Sanghvi and all your associates including the front desk!!!!!!
