Oral Conscious Sedation
Imagine drifting into a peaceful state of mind and relaxing completely during your dental visits. Oral conscious sedation can have that effect on our patients, making their visits stress-free. This form of sedation uses a calming medication that we prescribe before the dental visit. Patients take a pill before their appointment to relax their body and mind. While you will be awake and conscious, many people find they drift off in a dream-like state while they are sedated. You can still communicate or respond, but you will feel completely at ease during your dental treatment. Since there are lingering sedation effects for a few hours, patients using oral conscious sedation should not drive after their treatment.
Nitrous Oxide
“Laughing gas,” or nitrous oxide, has been used safely for decades as a mild sedation for dental treatments. Breathing in the gas during your dental procedure creates a mild sense of euphoria to help you stay calm and comfortable. You will be awake and aware but feel completely at ease. Nitrous oxide effects only last as long as you are breathing in the gas. Once you take in a few breaths of air without the gas, the effects dissipate quickly.
